Empress Eugenie's bodices, 1850-55. Silk, chiné (warp-printed), trimmed with silk blonde lace. The Bowes Museum (photos via the Museum's website and Google Cultural Institute). Says the Museum, "Often dresses had two bodices to match a skirt. The jacket style for daywear has pagoda sleeves, whereas for evening, the short, pointed bodice has short sleeves and a lower décolletage. Behind the ribbons across the front, there would have been lace or tulle." CLICK FOR LARGER IMAGES.
