Tried and tested structures. There are a number of “rules” in classical composition like using the golden mean or the rule of thirds. These seem to be less rules in the strict sense, but tried and true templates we can use to inform our own compositions. Drawing hands can be tricky 👋 ...
But one strategy to get me unstuck when I’m trying to draw from imagination is to create a simplified 2D version (either in my head or actually jotting it down as reference). ⠀ I can then use this as a reference or ‘blueprint’ to help me when I’m developing the 3D forms. ⠀ This definitely isn’t something that ‘magically’ makes the drawings ‘work’ it’s something I’ve had to work at to become just another tool in my artistic tool belt to use when things get a little tricky.
Add realism your digital paintings with the magic of reflection ✨🎨!
When we think about light, we often think about the sources - the sun, lamps etc. ⠀ But it’s important to remember that everything a light source hits becomes a light source itself via ‘reflection’. ⠀ Even the same object can reflect back onto itself, this will affect the colour of the light depending on the material as well. ⠀ This was a huge ‘aha’ moment for me 🤯 ⠀ Confusing, I know, but I hope this makes a little sense, tricky to explain in a short video 🙃

How do you think about drawing from imagination?
When drawing from imagination, you need a clear image in your head... or at least that’s what I used to think. ⠀ It never quite clicked with me how people could come up with these awesome characters from seemingly thin air 😱 ⠀ But as I’ve started to attempt to do this myself, there’s a few different ways I think about it...
🎨✍️Painting values can be tricky...
🎨✍️Painting values can be tricky... ⠀ Especially when I’ve found myself in a conundrum where there’s a particular section that just isn’t looking quite right and I’m not entirely sure why. ⠀ One way I like to tackle this is to have the mantra “If there’s a plane changes, there’s a value change” this one I believe I got from the great Steve Huston, shout out to you @stevehustonartist ✌️ ⠀ As always, stay consistent, use reference, have fun with it and remember, it’s only pixels baybee! 🕺✏️

Fix ‘flat’ painting problems with the help of ‘wireframes’
In the rendering stage, I’ve recognized the number 1 thing that’ll have me mindlessly noodling about, not making any progress is a lack of understanding of: ⠀ a. The light source b. The forms ⠀ One way I’ve found to get a little more clarity when it comes to the forms of whatever I’m drawing, so I can accurately create the illusion of light on it, is to ‘wireframe’ it out.
