We dub it the "Heart of Steel". It's about seven meters high and weighs about 68 metric tons. It was used as a steel converter from 1954 to 1964. This device served to blow air through liquid steel, causing oxides to separate out as a layer of slack on the top of the molten metal. The air was blown into the device through nozzles at the bottom. The objective was to produce low-phosphorus steel from high-phosphorus (cheap) local iron ores.
