I have used whipped back stitch for the stem and I would say this is by far the best stitch to create stems more than the stem stitch. All you have to do is create back stitch and use the same thread to loop through it and for the leaf like structure I have used Pistil stitch. Pistil stitch can also be called as long French knot stitch.
