Practice. Maybe part of a mech/power suit or something. The face plate (in my mind) would have two points of articulation, that's why it looks a little short when it's open, the bottom part from the lower eye socket down would slide up over the brow a little bit. The reason being it would look more flimsy if it just opened as one piece.
