Connections mean “power” in China. This is why social networks have become part of the relationship-building fabric of Chinese society. Nmbers certainly bear this out. Roughly half of China’s 513 million netizens are using social networking sites, & all of these social networks are home grown. They are Sina Weibo (twitter-like), Renren (facebook-like for college educationed) , Tencent (platform for the masses), Douban (open forum for movies, books, music reviews), and Wechat (mobile app).
