The very limitations of designing for letterpress allow swell press to play with color more. One of her favorite methods is overprinting. Since letterpress ink is transparent, she creates effects of overlapping colors, ombre (or ‘gradient’) or ‘split fountain’ inking.
As swell press puts it, “Once you start really working with color you understand how many variations there are. 'Navy’ isn’t just ‘navy’… navy to me could mean (and has proven to mean) something completely different to someone else. Does it have more red undertones? Green undertones? Gray? We don’t all see color the same way - our views are molded by our eye sensitivity, our environment, and the narrative of our lives. Having a guidebook to make sure you’re all on the same page is essential.”
Pantone 2229. On Instagram, swell press documents the step by step process of the print.
Kailua Bay Swirl - © Gray Malin “Color is very important to my creative process. When shooting my aerial photography from a doorless helicopter at 1,000 feet in the air, I first begin to notice pops of color, followed by shapes and lines—ultimately allowing me to photograph patterns that mesmerize me” @GrayMalin

At Gray Malin, Pantone Formula Guides are essential to any creative meeting where color is part of to the story - both in helping to foster creativity, while keeping everyone on the same color page when creating a layout, or putting together the creative for a new project. @GrayMalin

Colourful India by Vichaya Pop / 500px
I shot this while walking through the streets of Jodhpur, a.k.a. The Blue City. India is so full of life and colours. I will have to go there again very soon.
