Elijah Pierce, folk artist, 1892 - 1984. Pierce was a barber by trade, and a Baptist minister, he was born to two former slaves in Mississippi, and later settled in Columbus Ohio. His animal carvings have everything many people admire about true folk art... one thing being that it looks like he had zero reference for what these animals actually looked like, working from memory and imagination, and with a naive sensibility.
