Abstract paintings about faith, surrender, and childlike creativity.
My artwork explores the balance between control and release, mirroring lessons of faith, surrender, and childlike creativity. Through gestural, expressive mark-making contained within the boundaries of a canvas, I embrace both freedom and structure. Layers of color, varied in intensity and form, create a visual dialogue—some marks feel loose and spontaneous, while others are more deliberately placed, reflecting the delicate balance between surrender and discipline. My faith influences my creative process, both in spirit and in practice. Many of my paintings reference Bible verses in their titles, and the lessons I encounter in scripture often parallel those I learn in the studio. Painting teaches me to trust, let go, and make space for something greater than myself to take form.
“Looking for a Cure” was inspired by collages Laurel Shear made from images of her grandmother's silk slips. These works explore themes of fabric that touches the skin, intimacy, and life cycles. They reflect on ancestors and the objects her grandmother gave her before passing away, imbuing spirit and energy into the material. For Shear, painting embodies this energy. • oil on canvas 72.00w x 84.00h x 3.00d in
