Why You Shouldn't Use Lemon Juice on Your Skin
There are more DIY skincare recipes on the internet than you can shake a stick at, and most of them really, really like lemon juice. According to these DIY tips you should be slathering it all over your face and hair. Lemon juice smells nice, and it's pretty cheap. But is it effective? And is it safe?
The "60% of products absorb into your bloodstream" myth
The myth that "60% of what's applied to your skin is absorbed into your bloodstream" is one of my pet peeves. It's so far from the truth, and it's cited with such an air of authority that it really ticks me off. It also tends to be cited by the sorts of people who push "non-toxic" products, which is very much a BS marketing tactic.
How to Choose a Moisturizer: The Science
The beauty section is full of moisturizers for different skin types, and you'd think you'd be fine picking one that matches your skin type. They're useful molecules with a hydrophilic head that's attracted to water (and repels oil), and a lipophilic tail that's attracted to oils and grease (and repels water).
Chemical Exfoliants as Deodorant? The Science of Smelly Armpits
As a dedicated skincare addict, I own quite a few never-ending bottles of exfoliating acid toners that I can't really use up fast enough. They've been sitting around going dusty, and I was prepared to gift them to my grandchildren one day.
How to Start on Tretinoin (Retin-A) and Retinol
I recently started using a prescription tretinoin cream, a generic version of Retin-A (Stieva-A). Tretinoin is probably THE most popular and evidence-supported retinoid (vitamin A derivative) ingredient in skincare. It works as an acne treatment, for anti-aging (both wrinkles and uneven pigment) and a generous handful of other skin issues.
