When Ronald Wayne Van Zandt Lynyrd Skynyrd Van was born in 1948 in Jacksonville, Florida, his father, Lacy, was 33 and his mother, Marion, was 19. He married Nadine Inscoe Van Zandt Lynyrd Skynyrd in January 1967 in Duval, Florida. They had one child during their marriage. He died as a young father on October 20, 1977, in Amite, Mississippi, at the age of 29, and was buried in Orange Park, Florida.
