an orange and blue painting of a rhino

Let me start out by saying this has been one of the most successful and visually stunning projects that I've ever done with my students. It is definitely the most exciting printmaking project that we've ever done at Thomas. I wrote the lesson and went into the project thinking that it would probably be pretty good. I told my students that I'm absolutely blown away by the results of their talent and hard work. This lesson is a keeper. My previous 4th grade printmaking lesson was decent, but…

a pair of scissors sitting on top of a piece of paper with blue flowers painted on it

I made these collograph prints with very young children. The one pictured is my example. They started with a piece of craft foam and scissors. I explained that they should try cutting out different shapes: some small, some slightly bigger, and to try and use some straight cuts and some curved or wiggley cuts. They didn't need to worry about it looking like an object that could be recognized. One little girl did opt to cut out a flower and a little boy did a house. We used white glue to…

four different colored paper cut outs with animals on them and the words moo written in red

This is a fun and simple printmaking project, focusing on Pop Art. I am going to have my students replicate Andy Worhol's style of repeating a popular image on different colors of paper. My students are doing a unit on Marketplace so we'll focus on items that can be bought in the marketplace. I'll bring some groceries etc... in for the students to look at and we'll discuss Pop Art and Andy Worhol. They can do soup cans, but I'm going to ask them to think of something they like and see if…

there are many different colored pictures on the ground next to some black and pink paper

Since I've spent the last couple of weeks in Printmaking Land with my second and third graders, I thought I'd share everything I know about printmaking in the elementary art room! I started to record a podcast episode which quickly turned into TWO podcast episodes. There's a lot to printmaking in the elementary art room but none of it is scary, difficult or even all that messy! My kids love it and so do I. So I'll be sharing both podcast episodes here as well as my favorite lessons. Be sure…
