One great summer art project is to have your students create firework displays with pastels and hairspray. Students will layer colors on black paper with a 'broken pastel' technique to create a similar product to fireworks. Get the full lesson with sample artwork here.

I had never seen a daytime fireworks display before. It's kind of odd actually as the colors blend together to more of a pastel blur then the streaks normally seen at night. I wonder if it would have been even weirder with a blue sky instead of the heavy cloud cover.
