Lymph vessels

Lymph flows though a system of lymphatic vessels similar to blood vessels. They start as capillaries, penetrating nearly every tissue of the body and are closely associated with blood capillaries, but are closed at one end. Unlike the endothelia cells of blood capillaries, lymphatic endothelial cells have large gaps between them. The gaps are large enough for bacteria, lymphocytes and other cells to enter alone with the tissue fluid.

Tissue fluid is returned to the bloodstream in the pathway: lymphatic capillaries to collecting vessels to six lymphatic trunks to two collecting ducts to the subclavian veins. The lymphatic capillaries empty into nodes called collecting vessels, which filter the lymph. The lymph nodes converge to form larger lymphatic trunks (6), which drain a major portion of the body. The lymphatic trunks then converge to form two larger collecting ducts.
