Introductory paragraph

To introduce writing an introductory paragraph, I use the acronym HAT (Hook, Arch, Thesis.)This product allows students to practice the elements of HAT in a visual format that doesn't appear too intimidating. Students work on writing several types of hooks (painting an image, providing a shocking statistic, or asking a question) as well as work on writing a solid thesis statement. Finally, they put it all together to compose a full introductory paragraph.

This lesson is designed to help students build knowledge about writing great introductory paragraphs using a Common Core basis. The lesson can be taught in one of three ways. One way is for you or a substitute to teach this lesson in one to two class periods. A second way is for you to divide the days that have two pages and teach each page as a bell ringer on a separate day so the lesson will last for eight or nine days.
