The IT band is a long band of connective tissue that runs from the outside of the hip into the outside of the knee. So the actual IT band itself does not contract.  However, at the top of the IT band at the hip is a muscle called the TFL (tensor fascia lata). When this muscle gets overworked and tight it pulls on the IT band causing the irritation and pain you are feeling!
