how to sew a disappearing four patch quilt block with text overlay

The disappearing four patch is an easy quilt block that is perfect for beginners because it looks more complicated than it actually is!

a cutting board with some lines on it and a square in the middle that has been cut into smaller rectangles

Hi again! Some time ago I saw Jenny Doan's tutorial on the Disappearing 4 Patch (D4P). If you're into using precuts, check out her other tutorials, but be aware that your to-do-list might easily double. Click at your own risk, don't blame me, I was nice enough to warn you! Anyway, the finished D4P block looks like this: This tutorial is a variation on that block, which I call DD4P (Diagonal Disappearing 4 Patch). And here is how you make it: Fabrics Needed You need at least two different…

a piece of fabric that has been cut into squares

Ever wonder what to do with a fat eighth? Here is one great simple block - it's a disappearing 9 patch - cut on the diagonal and reassembled. For this quilt I used all Cotton + Steel fat eighths. A fat eighth is 9" x 21" - but not all fabric cuts are totally accurate. Some of my pieces were just shy of 9" deep, so I cut my squares for this 9-patch: 4 1/4" x 4 1/4". Pull out 9 squares that make a variety in both color and dark/light. Sew into a 9 patch, 3 across by 3 down. Now cut this whole…

a piece of red and white quilted material on a gray surface with squares in the middle

A new quilt has begun and is up on the design wall. Four blocks done and so far so good. A collection of reds and whites are going to be used for a unified scrappy look. Originally, the lights were going to be low-volume red and whites; however, they were difficult to find. After "auditioning" different ones, I decided that I preferred white for clear contrast and continuity. Think of Minnie's white spots on red. :-) I had to use self-discipline on starting this quilt (or any other that are…

a quilt on the ground with grass in the background

Is this not the cutest quilt? My friend, Tricia, made it with a couple of Benartex Charm Packs (5" squares). I love how fresh and cheerful the fishy, froggy, and geometric prints look against the crisp, white tone-on-tone background fabric. I like the quilt so much, that I want to make one, too! Hmmmm, shall I…

the quilts are laid out and ready to be sewn

Earlier this week I showed a D4P block I had whipped up for a mug rug. Missy wrote and asked if I would be willing to share a tutorial. Of course! The original Pinterest pin I stole it from is here which includes the math for different size blocks. Sew (4) 5" squares together and spiral the center seam. Use your favorite pencil to mark 2" to the side of each corner, for a total of 8 marks. Without moving the fabric, cut 4 diagonal lines from mark to mark made in the previous photo…
