Alberto Burri (1915 – 1995) was an Italian painter and sculptor. Burri was born in Umbria, Italy in 1915. He gained a medical degree from the University of Perugia specialising in tropical medicine. In 1940, two days after Italy entered World War II, he was called up as a medic and was sent to Libya in 1943. In May 1944 after the defeat of the Axis forces, his unit was captured in Tunisia and he was interned in Camp Howze prisoner-of-war camp in Gainesville, Texas, where he began to paint…
