Assyrian Empire
The Assyrians were an ancient Semitic people who originated in northern Mesopotamia, primarily in present-day northern Iraq and parts of Syria, taking their name from their chief city and deity, Ashur. Emerging around 2600 BCE, they rose from a city-state to become a dominant regional power, especially during the Middle Assyrian (1365–1050 BCE) and Neo-Assyrian Empires (911–609 BCE). They spoke Akkadian in its Assyrian dialect and were famous for their military strength, rigorous administrative methods, monumental architecture, and detailed stone reliefs. Their powerful empire ultimately fell in 612 BCE, conquered by a coalition of Medes and Babylonians, yet their cultural legacy continued to influence later civilizations in the region.
